History
System Zero's origins were the cancellation of a StepMania-based game called Arrow Stomping Max.
The theme was originally not going to be released, but after asking Katze about it, he goaded AJ into releasing it.
Versions
Official
0.5 - The Season Evolution
This was the first public release of the theme. Its major features at time of release were:
- First publicly released theme to use PaneDisplay.
- First theme with conditional backgrounds based on the seasons and certain dates.
0.549 - THE FINAL
Version 0.549 was supposedly going to be the last version due to AJ losing interest in the theme. It was mainly a bugfix release which also introduced ScreenMenuKid.
"1.0" - SZ+ Transitional
This version was going to be the base for system zero+. Mainly a bugfix/graphic change release.
Cancelled
system zero+
system zero+ was going to unify the Interim StepMania 4.0 Default Theme and StepMania System Zero "1.0" by way of graphic changes. It was canceled due to lack of interest.
System Zero CultMix
A modified version of an older System Zero for the CultMix project, which also went under.
Derivatives
"Hell Mix"
Around 2005, a Chinese person going by the name of Panda (no relation to the Outphase.com and Bemanistyle admin) posted pictures of a modified System Zero on his blog.
The theme was eventually released, and AJ made a really bad attempt at trying to procure it on the MGZ forums. The differences in this version are minimal at best. A few graphics were changed to Pandas and a few new challenging ("Hell") modifiers were added.
Hopscotch Mix 3 Excel
The theme for Hopscotch Mix 3 Excel looks to be a modified System Zero. The PaneDisplay, Player Score, and pad graphics on ScreenSelectMusic seem to be indicative of this, along with the Ranking box's position and the use of SZ's _game chars 9x1.png.
Secrets
April Fool's
On April 1st of any given year, the Company screen will change logos.
Birthdays
On the following dates, birthday messages are displayed:
- November 10: AJ 187
- April 24: "King Dead"
- July 3: die Katze 88
- May 22: nsr_neko (Renard)
In addition, on September 19th, there will be a new set of falling graphics that appear on the shared background. This is in celebration of k//eternal's birthday.
ScreenMenuKid
There is a secret menu hidden within System Zero that houses a few inside jokes. In order to get access to it, select your difficulty at 11:11 AM or 10:22 PM (22:22). This will work regardless of your time zone, as StepMania checks the system time. According to the official page, there have been complaints about this menu.
Raw
A small little easter egg, the Pump it Up Exceed 2 song Raw by Banya can be set to be selected by entering this code on Select Style: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right. (No points for guessing where the code came from.) If performed right, you will hear the coin insertion noise.
ScreenStage
Selecting certain songs in Event mode will trigger messages on ScreenStage.
- SCREAM SQUAD -for X- and MEI -for X-: "it's four X omg!!!" will appear.
- RAW by Banya: "NOBODY CAN PASS THIS SONG. IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO CAN, THEY ARE LYING UNLESS THEY ARE MORE THAN ONE PERSON." This is in reference to RAW's stepchart on Pump it Up Exceed 2, which contains a number of multi-panel notes.
- GENERIC PRRR by SCAR: "prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" (with a lot more r's) will appear on screen and scroll to the left. This is in reference to the song essentially being "prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" repeated a lot.
- Xtreme Terror RMX V1.2: "Here is Justice. Here is a 500+ BPM song." is displayed.
- 'CRAZEY BANG SUPAR MJISCOOL EL3T MIXX: "WHOMGCOOLSONG!" along with a list of people involved with the song and a complete file list is displayed.
- San Dimas High School Football Rules: "so wait they made a stepfile for this? awesome."
