Themes by Type
Making a return from the previous incarnation of the wiki, there are a number of categories that themes can fall under. Some themes can fall under multiple categories.
Original Themes
Original Themes are themes that don't really resemble anything else.
Inspired Themes
Inspired Themes may take their cues from a number of places, be it other rhythm games, other video games, or anything.
Recreation Themes
Recreation Themes aim to recreate an interface, usually either with pinpoint accuracy or artistic license (KatzeExtreme being a good example of the latter).
Concept Themes
Concept Themes are just that. Most of them don't get fleshed out into full ideas, but they do show interesting uses of StepMania. Some concept themes do away with the idea of StepMania as a rhythm game engine entirely, such as Stupid Gun Game.
Modification Themes
Modification Themes use someone else's work as a base. Sometimes permission is given, while other times it's not.
The most popular themes to modify are k//eternal's and the In The Groove 2 arcade theme.
Joke Themes
Joke Themes aren't to be taken seriously. They let themers blow off some steam or have a laugh at the expense of the community.
